Home Gardeners Supply Local Products Through Barter System

By Kyle Studstill on July 9, 2010

Giapo’s Gelato shop in Auckland has launched a barter-based program this week where community-based and home gardeners can exchange their local produce for free gelato. Through a certification processes, the fruits and vegetables supplied by the community are tested for compliance to safety concerns and Giapo’s strict organic policies, before acting as a supply source for the shop’s varied flavor combinations. The community-grown fruits and vegetables are featured in creations like Giapo’s Organic Banana Sorbet and other imaginative recipes.

A number of projects reflect the slow decentralization of food production in urban areas, from the growth of community-driven rooftop gardens to projects like Fallen Fruit that help urban explorers gather natural fruits in their city. The barter system Giapo’s is implementing stands to naturally connect these communities with other local consumers of local goods, with the incentive of free gelato for produce suppliers.
