Change Will Lead To Insight: A Cure For Creative Blocks

By Paloma M. Vazquez on July 1, 2010

As many of us in the US are getting ready for the long Independence Day weekend, a post at The99percent got us thinking about how truly disconnecting and changing your environment – be it city, state, country, or borough - can reinvigorate creativity.

In short, if you want to loosen that creative block, research demonstrates that leaving your office or desk, putting your phone/laptop/iPad aside, and even spending a bit of time in solitude are likely to provide the inspiration you need.  As the author, Jocelyn Glei suggests;

…navigate a new city, take in nature on a long walk, sit quietly and read a book, or have a serendipitous conversation with a stranger.

Whether it’s in a foreign country or a yoga class by your apartment, the point is to explore and get moving – you’re likely to get some perspective by thinking outside of the realm of your immediate challenge – be it related to your work, or a personal project. Once you take your mind off the source of your creative frustration, ideas may come to you from unexpected sources. Glei concludes;

As psychiatrist Milton Erickson put it, “Change will lead to insight far more often than insight will lead to change.”
