Rap Map: Mapping Lyrical Content

By Shaun Savage on August 23, 2010

The Rap Map is a Google Map powered website brought to us by the people behind the Rap Genius Blog. It’s premise is to analyse the lyrics of hip-hop and then map notable places and locations contained therein. The project is in it’s nascent stages and as a result many notable cities with proud heritage within the genre such as Baltimore and Washington (at the time of writing) are not represented.

The website is open source and readers are invited to help build the site’s database. Given the now undoubtedly world reach of the genre, surely it’s only a matter of time until the name dropsĀ  in BrazilianĀ Funk Carioca, UK Grime and other domestic rap movements also start to be sign posted.

Rap Genius have also been responsible for RapMetrics a system of measuring an MCs rhyme density and by extension give a gauge in their technical ability. Read more about that here.
