The Newark Vertical Farm

By Naresh Kumar on August 3, 2010

Vertical farming may have just received a tremendous boost with a recent collaboration between two of the biggest visionaries in this field. Dr. Dickson Despommier has partnered with Architects Weber Thompson to develop the Newark Vertical Farm in New Jersey. Dr. Despommier is considered the pioneer of vertical farming, while Weber Thompson is renowned for its innovative approach to this new type of urban agriculture.

Here’s the project description of the Newark Vertical Farm from Weber Thompson:

The Newark Vertical Farm represents not only the next generation for Urban Agriculture and Vertical Farming but also an approach to design which incorporates integrated and overlapping sustainable design features. More than just a Vertical Farm, it is a research and development program for sustainable design in an urban context. It is an open system designed to attract any number of features for both demonstration and research into the best ideas for sustainable design of our cities.
