Are Some People’s Brains Built For Twitter?
A new study reveals that there is a correlation between the size of someone’s social network and the size of their Amygdala. Through magnetic resonance brain scans, researchers were able to prove people with larger Amygdala’s have richer and more complex social connections both online and in real life. Researchers say the brain developed to cope with mankind’s more hectic social life.
This would mean that many people who are self-professed experts at social media may be predisposed to excel at the technology. It would also appear to suggest that social media is not necessarily a replacement for personal socializing but simply an extension of pre-established social ability. Although social media is not mentioned in the study it is interesting to speculate how this might relate to the increasing importance of social technologies in our culture.
