Future Of Eco Friendly Personal Transport Arrives In Masdar City

By Stephen Fortune on January 21, 2011

We couldn’t help but pay attention to the unbelievably eco friendly plans of Masdar City when the UAE unveiled it’s concept back in 2008.

Now Treehugger reports that Masdar City has begun rolling out it’s Personal Rapid Transport (PRT) system, albeit at a more reduced scale than the proposals envisioned when the city’s plans were initially unveiled.

(The personal rapid transportation pods) are made by the Dutch company 2GetThere, and are essentially little electric cars, each powered by lithium-phosphate batteries. As it stands, there are just a handful of the vehicles ferrying the slightly larger handful of people who currently live in Masdar between the two stations

As the video below explains the ‘pods’ operate on dedicated PRT corridors and are guided by a dual system of fibre optic cables and magnetic rails.
