The Realization Of A Digital Business Card: LinkedIn’s New Update

By Nate Graham on April 13, 2011

A recent update to LinkedIn hopes to help establish the platform as the universal provider of professional profiles across the web.

The three newest features include a share button, member profile, and company insider plug-ins. The share button mirrors similar tweet, like, and recommend buttons, broadcasting content to a professional audience. Additionally, the company insider and member profile plug-ins help to enhance personal and organizational websites with tailored LinkedIn information and content.

More important than these developments though, is the new ability to connect with the platform through their OAuth API. This allows third parties to facilitate sign-in through LinkedIn while accessing the rich professional information provided. This feature has the potential to solidify the social platform as the definitive professional destination, while fully realizing the concept of a digital business card.

Updates are based on Javascript APIs for ease of development and feature OAuth 2.0 to enhance and secure third party sign-in services.
