Ford Develops Car Seat That Monitors Your Heart [Video]

Ford engineers from their European Research center, together with researchers from the RWTH Aachen University in Germany, have developed a prototype vehicle seat that can monitor the driver’s heart activity and could reduce the number of accidents that occur due to motorists having a heart attack while driving.

The car seat features six embedded electrodes that can detect the electrical impulses generated by the heart through the driver’s clothing. If they are suffering a cardiovascular issue such as a heart attack, the technology could work with advanced saftey systems to make the car brake or keep it within the lane. Connected to a system like the Ford SYNC, it could use the driver’s mobile phone to send a message to medical centers or inform an emergency response team.

During on-the-road testing of the car seat, the heart-monitoring system was found to be “highly accurate” for 98% of the time the driver was behind the wheel. This video gives more detail about the system:
