‘Immunity Gene’ Cures Man Of AIDS
Timothy Ray Brown may potentially be the world’s first person to be cured of the Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) virus.
The forty-five year old resident of the Bay Area was tested positive for HIV in 1995, but after a stem cell treatment in Berlin in 2007, he has since stopped further treatment.
Scientists said Brown received stem cells from a donor who was immune to HIV. In fact, about one percent of Caucasians are immune to HIV. Some researchers think the immunity gene goes back to the Great Plague: people who survived the plague passed their immunity down and their heirs have it today.
