Four Person Unicycle ‘Artbike’ Created To Encourage Cycling

By Dave Pinter on June 29, 2011

Comissioned for this weekend’s upcoming Bicycle Wheel event in London, artist Gavin Turk and industrial designer Ben Wilson wanted to motivate more cycling through a unique riding experience. The pair created 4H, a four person unicycle. The project takes inspiration from Marcel Duchamp’s iconic Bicycle Wheel sculpture and uses stock unicycles as a readymade component. The unicycles are linked by a frame sleeved with multi-colored wood segments, a reference to conceptual artist André Cadere’s walking sticks which were treated a similar way for his performance pieces.

Riding 4H promises to be both a unique individual and collective experience. Turk and Wilson have retained the hands-free character of unicycle riding with 4H but users have to work together to determine their direction of travel. 4H will be available to ride this Saturday, July 2 along a stretch of East London’s Greenway foot and cycle path.
