MyPlate: The USDA’s New Food Group Symbol

By Emma Hutchings on June 6, 2011

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has a new food symbol called MyPlate, that has been launched by the First Lady Michelle Obama and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. The simple design of a plate of food with separate portions of important food groups hopes to encourage people to prepare and eat balanced and healthy meals.

The USDA’s dietary guidelines for Americans aim to educate consumers about nutrition and health. Their recommendations include:

Balancing Calories
● Enjoy your food, but eat less.
● Avoid oversized portions.

Foods to Increase
● Make half your plate fruits and vegetables.
● Make at least half your grains whole grains.
● Switch to fat-free or low-fat (1%) milk.

Foods to Reduce
● Compare sodium in foods like soup, bread, and frozen meals ― and choose the foods with lower numbers.
● Drink water instead of sugary drinks.
