UK-based developer Urban Space‘s first permanent American installation is a market in Downtown Brooklyn, featuring 22 repurposed shipping containers, transformed into market stalls for various retailers and vendors. Dekalb Market opened at the weekend and will remain open year-round, with food vendors, retail stores, artists, craft stalls and a record store among the mix. A vegetable garden, kitchen and classroom will provide areas for learning and discovery.
A competition was held earlier this year to find the most creative use for a shipping container. The winner was Bbox Radio station, which broadcasts all the goings-on in Brooklyn with call-in shows, music performances and more.
