Arts Thread: Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec At London Design Week

As the Festival Hub, the V&A has more than a few surprises up its sleeve at this year’s London Design Festival, including Amanda Levete’s Timber Wave installation at the entrance. And inside the imposing Raphael Court is the enchanting Textile Field, an installation by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec in collaboration with Danish textile company Kvadrat.

Aiming to transform the way that visitors engage with the space and the massive Raphael paintings on its walls, Textile Field invites visitors to stop, relax and contemplate. It strips the room of its potentially intimidating formality by providing a platform of soft, striped fabric in gentle blues and greens for people to lounge on.

The designers were fascinated to see how the Field would ultimately be used and when ARTS THREAD visited there was certainly a real variety of uses being employed – from embracing couples to lone gentlemen reading books, excited children playing games of chase and people perched on the edge.

The fact that you have to take your shoes and socks off to get onto the Field immediately puts you at ease and whether just as a place to sit down after a long jaunt around the museum or an unexpected playground for the young, or, arguably as intended, a more comfortable space from which to view the art, it was certainly being enjoyed.

Textile Field will be at the V&A until 25th September.
