Arts Thread: Vera Wiedermann Transforms Bakery Into Food Laboratory

“Freshly Baked,” part of Vienna Design Week, transforms the Frühbauer Bakery to ‘remember the poetry of original food.’

On display at Frühbauer Bakery in Vienna until October 09 2011, Freshly Baked sees designer Vera Wiedermann transform the traditional store into a food laboratory.

Bales of hay stack up at the back of the bakery, while a series of differently-shaped glass domes are arranged along a counter, while on high, glass jars are filled with grains such as millet and corn.

Vera Wiedermann says: ‘lifestyle, culture and individual identity is defined through food and its preparation. These days a great effort of creativity and experimental thinking is put into the style of our food. Therefore we lose the sensual value of the unprocessed version. To overcome this problem we need to avoid the associations with entertainment and artificial sounds to remember the poetry of original food.’
