Google Unveils Android’s New OS: Ice Cream Sandwich

By Emma Hutchings on October 20, 2011

This week, Google and Samsung have together unveiled the Galaxy Nexus smartphone, running the latest Android software, known as Ice Cream Sandwich. The HD-resolution phone offers a 1280 x 720, 4.65″ Super Amoled screen. A new font called “Roboto” has been optimized for HD displays and all hardware buttons have been eliminated in favor of adaptable software buttons.

Ice Cream Sandwich (or Android 4.0) has some great features, including Face Unlock, which uses state-of-the-art facial recognition technology to analyze the structure of your face, so the phone only unlocks for you. Android Beam uses NFC to share web pages, apps and YouTube videos with other phones simply by tapping them together. There is also an improved speech-to-text engine,  a data usage monitor, photo editing tool, resizable widgets, improved browser, and the ability to take screenshots on the device.

The Galaxy Nexus will launch in the US, Europe and Asia this November, and following that it will roll out globally.
