‘Buffer Busters’ is an augmented reality mobile gaming application that challenges users to hunt virtual ‘Buffer Monsters’ slowing down networks.
In our research for the Future Of Gaming report, the PSFK consulting team noticed that one motivation driving in-game participation was Rewards. One example of this mechanic is ‘Buffer Busters’- an augmented reality mobile gaming application created by the German telecommunications company Vodafone that challenges users to hunt virtual ‘Buffer Monsters’ in their cities which are slowing down networks in exchange for points redeemable at the company’s nearby brick and mortar stores. The location-based app guides gamers to infested areas all over the country, where they can use the augmented-reality viewfinder to capture the monsters layered onto the real environment. For their efforts, gamers can go to a Vodafone store to exchange the captured monsters by scanning an in-store QR code for virtual points and badges and the chance to win one of three lifetime plans.
