Hefty-Looking Geometric Kite Is A Lightweight Flying Sculpture

By Kyana Gordon on December 23, 2011

Behold, ‘Little Shining Man’, perhaps the most brilliant kite design we’ve seen. Conceived by artists, Heather and Ivan Morison in collaboration with London architectural designer Sash Reading and Birmingham fabrication design studio, Queen and Crawford, the handmade sculpture features over 23,000 individual components.

The astonishingly, lightweight geometric kite is comprised of carbon-fiber rods, specially designed 3D-printed connectors, and a handmade composite fabric typically used for yacht sails.

The work commissioned by Dandara, a property developer was inspired by Alexander Graham Bell’s tetrahedral kites. Three of the pieces will hang in the atrium of the client’s development and be taken down once a year to fly in the local bay.

The modular structure’s easily scalable form lifts effortlessly into the air regardless of its size. It’s that light.  The beautiful video below of  ’Little Shining Man’s’ inaugural flight was shot on a beach at the British island of Jersey.
