Design Creative Of The Week: Sam Smith [Visual Communication]

By Dory Carr-Harris on January 30, 2012

Umbro, Sam Smith

In this week’s edition of our series of ‘Creatives of the Week’ chosen from ARTS THREAD’s graduate portfolios, we take a look at the specialisms of visual communication and highlight the portfolio of Sam Smith, a 2011 graduate of Winchester School of Art.

Why we like Sam: We like Sam’s fresh apprach to sports branding, with an emphasis on vintage aspects. Sam comments on his projects:

Within my graphic work I love to work closely with typography, and find new ways in which I can use it to convey a message. When I’m not in the studio I spend a lot of time playing and watching sports, which is why I have a great interest in design for sport. I have also always been influenced by vintage football memorabilia which greatly influences my working style.

Sam’s design process: ‘When starting a new project I think primarily think: Who’s the audience? Where will it be? What’s its purpose?’

Sam continues:

Once I have established this basic blueprint of a project I will then begin to research into anything and everything about the subject and start to pull it all together. I like to work in sketchbooks primarily and have a hands on approach to design work, before moving onto a computer for the main construction.

Sam’s take on freelance work:

Recently I have been freelancing at some fashion and apparel companies and have really enjoyed it. As much as it’s challenging, it’s very satisfying. In the future I wish to work more with fashion and apparel brands. I feel it is an area in which I can see myself working for a few years to come.
