US Army Introduces Its Own Brand Of Weapons For Video Games

By Liz Walsh on January 10, 2012

In a move that will undoubtedly create some controversy, the United States Army is introducing peripherals for some of the video game world’s most popular titles, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. CTA Digital, the company that manufactures gaming devices for Playstation 3, Xbox, and Wii, will be making the officially endorsed devices.

Some of the devices will include a ‘Sniper Action Rifle,’ ‘Elite Force Assault Rifle,’ ‘Commando Assault Rifle,’ and ‘covert style’ microphone for multi-player entertainment, all with a high level of authenticity, including the Army’s logo.

The move is part of an effort to recruit more young people to join the military. Clearly the effort raises moral questions as to whether the military is now valorizing violence through video game glorification of guns and war, and on a practical level, there still remains the question of how effective such a maneuver will be in bolstering recruitment.
