Volkswagen Zaps The Beetle, Creates E-Bugster

Volkswagen Zaps The Beetle, Creates E-Bugster

By Dave Pinter on January 14, 2012

We mentioned last week that one story we’d keep an eye on was what mystery electric vehicle VW was going to debut at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show. Thanks to the internet, we saw images leaked the night before so sadly there wasn’t any surprise at Cobo Hall. Still, the debut of the E-Bugster looks pretty cool and it represents another step Volkswagen in taking in electrical vehicle exploration. And this chopped version of the new Beetle looks pretty cool in person.

The E-Bugster is powered by a 114-horsepower electric motor from energy supplied via lithium-ion batteries. It is a similar package to the one we tested a year and a half ago in Germany installed in a Golf.

VW hasn’t said whether or not the E-Bugster will see production in the future.
