Personal, Private Dining With Individual Wooden Restaurant Booths

By Emma Hutchings on January 11, 2012

The Amsterdam-based design studio Tjep has created some interesting elements for the interior of the Fabbrica restaurant in Bergen, the Netherlands. The train cabin-style dining pods offer patrons a cozy and relaxed place to eat, and their unfinished timber frames create an earthy and authentic look.

Tjep decided to use natural materials rather than painted surfaces, gloss and shine. The designers describe how the current economic climate affected their innovative approach:

In Bergen we show materials instead of using painted surfaces. We did this to be more in touch with the economic context of the moment. It’s not time for Bling Bling anymore, people want more authenticity and less entertainment.

These semi-enclosed, intimate dining spaces are slightly elevated, inviting patrons to climb up the small two or three-step ladders to sit in them. They are modeled after train cabins and provide the diners with a safe and comfy area that has a sense of privacy.
