Digital Kiosk Helps Customers Eat Healthier At McDonald’s

By Emma Hutchings on February 27, 2012

Design company QA Graphics has created an interactive digital kiosk for a McDonald’s franchise in Richardson, Texas, that provides customers with nutritional information about the menu items and lets them make an informed choice about their meal.

The 42-inch touchscreen display (which was requested by the owner of the restaurant, Jonathan Chan) is the first of its kind. It displays images along with the nutrional breakdown showing the breakdown of protein, carbohydrates, sodium, fat, calories, fiber, cholesterol, sugars, calcium and iron that is present in each menu item.

Digital Kiosk Offers Nutritional Info To McDonald's Customers

The ‘Build Your Meal’ tool lets customers assemble their meal in four steps and see what the total nutritional information will be. Users choose an entrée, snacks or sides, beverages and dessert, and can customize their selection if they want to reduce calories, sodium, etc, by choosing a low-fat dressing or omitting the cheese or sauce.

There is also information about how the McDonald’s menu can be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet. Suggested meals are provided for those who want a healthier fast food option, along with simple tips for cutting calories, such as ordering water instead of soda.
