Viral video shows a kid in a toy store talking about the enforced gender roles of shoppers.
If you haven’t seen it yet, this viral video from last year showing a little girl sharing her thoughts on gender roles and marketing techniques is worth a watch. While visiting a toy store Riley asks why all the girls have to buy princesses and pink toys, when they might want superheroes instead, saying “the companies who make these try to trick the girls into buying the pink stuff.” A recent post on Cultural Fuel makes a great point about this video:
Obviously, today’s kids are a lot more cued up on what goes around them, not just in terms of technology and media, but also in terms of encrusted marketing tactics. I think this is just one example, but as kids get more and more share of voice through the social web, marketers will need to find better answers for Riley and her friends.
