Device Turns Smartphones Into Wind Meters

Shaka plugs into the iPhone's headphone jack and lets users see the wind speed and wind direction to help users excel at sports like surfing and golf.

Emma Hutchings

Shaka is a small and accurate gadget for your smartphone that measures the wind speed and direction. It plugs into the headphone jack and lets you keep a record of your measurements, share them with friends, and find out where the wind is perfect on a crowdsourced map.

The wind meter pairs with an app to deliver the speed and direction wherever you are, just by holding it up in the air. It would be very useful for those who take part in sports where wind is important, like surfing and golf. Shaka is launching soon for the iPhone for around $60, and there are Android and Windows Phone versions being developed as well.
