Electric Motorcycle With Spherical Wheels Drives In Any Direction [Pics]

This omnidirectional bike that will remain upright, even at a standstill.

A group of students from the Charles W Davidson College of Engineering, have created an omnidirectional electric motorcycle. The vehicle has two large spherical balls as wheels and that allow the driver to completely balance upright, even when the vehicle is not in motion. The Spherical Drive System (SDS) is accompanied by sophisticated control mechanisms that even allow it to go in any direction.

To help the SDS stay balanced, the students use data from MEMS gyroscopic sensor technology and onboard accelerometer, rather than ordinary mechanical gyros. The project took off early last year and gained inspiration from tech designs such as Will Smith’s spherical ride in the movie I, Robot, the Segway, and also the ball-balancing Rezero Ball Bot.
