Sony and indie band Metric have debuted a crowdsourced, HD music video for the track Synthetica– that was shot entirely by Sony’s new 4G LTE smartphone, the Xperia Ion. During a live acoustic performance of the song at the Hotel on Rivington’s penthouse in New York City, audience members were given Xperia Ion smartphones to film the performance.

Footage from the one-take performance was later edited by director Chris Lenox Smith to create a cohesive piece. Peter Farmer, vice president of marketing for North America at Sony, said of the unique music video:

We wanted to take the experience beyond the smartphone by pushing the boundaries of how people use technology. Using the Xperia ion’s outstanding HD capturing capabilities, we were able to create a music video for Metric that is both innovative and imaginative.
