Modernist principles often preach that “form follows function,” but artist Dhani Sutanto, who spoke at PSFK CONFERENCE LONDON thinks otherwise; his ideology, “form over function” looks to transform drab technologies into more personal and interesting objects that we could use in our daily lives.

Sutanto presented two of his designs: first, an Oyster Card ring, which can be worn and used just like a London Tube pass. The artist melted the plastic, leaving the wires and sensor, which he molded into a custom ring. He hopes that this will be a more convenient way for Tube travelers, especially women, to pass through without hesitation or fumbling through a bag. Second, a special chain of lights called Left Right Okay, which attaches to the back of your jacket when you’re biking, and has sensors so you can signal when turning without taking your hands off the handlebars (much like a car). Sutanto hopes that his inventions will not only be accessible and helpful, but will also turn technological obstacles into interactive, interpersonal pieces.

Some highlights from the talk:

  • The more an object can relate to its user, the better.
  • Make the mundane interesting.
  • Creating objects that promote genuine interaction will turn technological obstacles into interpersonal tools.
