Austrian bereavement company Aspetos has developed a series of interactive headstones that cemetery visitors can scan with their mobile device.
Austrian bereavement company Aspetos is using digital technology to enable cemetery visitors to learn more about the people laid to rest from their gravestones. A series of QR codes have been developed that share pictures and biographies of the departed, which can be read with a smartphone or tablet.
Reuters reports that the company has been working on the project for five years and the first QR code gravestones will begin to appear in Austria within weeks. The idea of putting QR codes onto gravestones is also being experimented with in the U.S., UK, Australia, and Germany.
The deceased person’s digital profile could also include videos and tributes from family and friends, which can be updated as time goes by. The QR codes can also be added to memorials and tribute plaques on benches.
