Foundry, a research team at Mint Digital, is working on a sourdough toy and online game for children. The Tamagotchi-type device has a real-world purpose: to encourage kids to nurture and cultivate yeast so they can make bread.

The team has carried out experimental bread making and extensive taste testing. They have also designed a physical ‘nest’, which houses the vessel that holds the sourdough. This transparent globe has sensors that monitor different variables to track the bread’s progress.

Wired reports that children can use the globe as a game controller in an accompanying online world, to move around a dough-like blob called Doug. If they haven’t taken care of their bread, they won’t be able to play any games. If their sourdough has been looked after, they will be able to play with Doug and could uncover recipes by getting a highscore. Check out Foundry’s blog to find out more about the project.
