PSFK talks to founder of brand La Colombe about his new TV show Dangerous Grounds.
In the new show Dangerous Grounds that airs on the Travel Channel on Tuesdays at 9pm EST, Todd Carmichael explores an emerging world of coffee as he tries to find new sources to sell through his company. PSFK caught up with the founder of La Colombe Torrefaction to discuss the show:
So, what’s the show about?
It follows a guy in the 3rd world and exposes new areas where coffee is growing. Did you know that 80 countries are capable of growing coffee and we tend to only source from about 5 coffee countries? 75 other countries need a shot at making the market.
Why do you think it’s so important to look at the markets?
There’s so much labor involved in coffee, it’s insane. Hundreds of millions of people are living off coffee – it’s an extraordinarily important part of life.
Why is La Colombe Torrefaction so interested?
We will be buying coffee from these locations. We want to spend money where it has the biggest impact. We’re going in and making serious investments especially with coffee from Colombia and Ethiopia.
We also want to inspire other coffee companies and importers; the problem is that there’s a bit of group-thought going on out there in the coffee community. People believe that certain countries have the beset coffee and then they compete in those territories and a status quo sets in. But did you know that theres amazing coffee grown in Nepal??
And when it comes to coffee being bought by the big guys… well, you don’t even need a passport if you work at Starbuicks and buy coffee.
