13-year-old McKenna Pope started a petition on Change.org for a gender-neutral easy-bake oven from Hasbro after her brother wanted one for Christmas but there was only a ‘girly’ purple model with girls on the packaging. The petition gained over 45,000 signatures and top chefs including Bobby Flay, Jose Andreas, Jeff Mahin, Joshua Whigham, and Manuel Trevino, voiced their support for the campaign.
At a recent meeting with McKenna at their headquarters, Hasbro announced a gender-neutral silver, blue, and black version that will be marketed to both boys and girls. The toy company plans to introduce the new color scheme at the industry’s Toy Fair in New York in February and it will be in stores next summer. McKenna said:
I couldn’t be happier with the outcome of our meeting. I am thrilled that Hasbro has agreed to make a gender neutral Easy Bake Oven after my campaign on Change.org. I am so thankful to everyone who supported this campaign. With their new product Hasbro is affirming that everyone can cook and I can’t wait to share this gift with my little brother Gavyn.
