An Infographic Study Of The Adult Film Industry [Pics]

Using averages of porn actors profiles as data, Jon Millward created infographics that give an overview of trends in the adult film industry.

Jon Millward spent 6 months obsessing over porn. Not so unusual, but his obsession wasn’t over watching it but pouring over profiles of porn stars on the Internet Adult Film Database (IAFD). Using 10,000 profiles (7,000 women, 3,000 men) Millward created an in-depth statistical study of your average porn star: height, age, years as an active industry participant, and it may not be what you think.

The IAFD contains profiles of 120,000 people in the adult film industry, compiled by a handful of porn enthusiasts. The database includes information such as age, weight, hair color, etc that Millward used to come to conclusions about the average physical attributes in pornography. You think porn star, you think Jenna Jameson: busty, blonde, busty. But in reality, according to Millward’s study, most female porn actors are brunette and their chests are a very average 34B.

Millward’s data analysis goes beyond physical characteristics in the porn industry to look at certain stereotypes and trends over the past 40 years. For instance, anal sex has been on the rise, as it has been in the general population (something generally blamed on porn) with 62% of female actors listing they will perform it in their profiles. Millward also challenges the idea that porn is bad for women, stating that only a minority get out after doing one film, while most make a minimum of three.

Most women don’t quit after one film—in fact, the majority (at least 53%) do three or more. So, to update… with the facts, do most women do three films and then quit because the experience is so humiliating and painful? Perhaps. Or maybe they just don’t like it and stop.

He slightly goes beyond his scope using the data at hand to perhaps make some of his conclusions. Is 10,000 profiles enough to have a true understanding of the porn industry? What about all the porn actors who were never big enough to get a profile on IAFD? There could be a slew of women who did feel degraded by porn and never had a profile. And the reverse could equally be true.

Nevertheless, it is an interesting compilation of information about an industry that prefers to exist in the backwaters of the internet.
