Veronica Mars Creator Turns To Kickstarter To Crowdfund The Movie

The full-length movie version of the popular TV show has been sanctioned by Warner Bros. if it raises $2M.

The creator (Rob Thomas) and star (Kristen Bell) of the popular TV show Veronica Mars have turned to Kickstarter to fund a full-length movie. They met with the studio that owns it, Warner Bros., who agreed that if they could show there was enough fan interest to warrant a movie, then it could be produced.

The movie project set a goal of $2M and reached $1M in just 4 hours and 24 minutes, setting a new Kickstarter record. It has now blasted past it’s goal, raising $2.5M with 29 days left to go.

The plan is to go into production this summer and release the movie in early 2014. Could Kickstarter be a viable new way for feature films (not just indie films) to gage interest and promote themselves by engaging fans and offering them enticing rewards?

For the Veronica Mars movie project, fans can pledge from $10 (for a PDF of the shooting script and updates throughout the movie’s production) all the way up to $10,000 (for a speaking role in the movie). A reasonable $35 will get you a digital version of the movie within a few days of it’s theatrical debut, plus a limited edition t-shirt and the shooting script PDF.
