Smart Citizen Kit Enables Crowdsourced Environmental Monitoring
The open-source platform aims to build an interactive global environmental database.
The Smart Citizen Kit is a crowdsourced environmental monitoring platform. By scattering devices around the world, the creators hope to build a global network of sensors that report local environmental conditions like CO and NO2 levels, light, noise, temperature and humidity.
Organized by the Fab Lab at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, a team of scientists, architects, and engineers are paving the way to humanize environmental monitoring. The open-source platform consists of arduino-compatible hardware, data visualization web API and a mobile app. Users are invited to take part in the interactive global environmental database, visualizing their data and comparing it with others around the world.
The piece of hardware comprising two printed-circuit boards is known as ‘The Ambient Board.’ It features sensors that measure air composition, temperature, light intensity, sound levels, and humidity. It streams data measured by the sensors over wi-fi and power can be provided by a solar panel and/or battery.
The online component of the Smart Citizen Kit is used for logging and visualizing the data measured by the hardware. You can also share your data with others and view what other users in your community or around the world are reporting. You can also communicate with the physical hardware over an easy-to-use app on your smartphone.
The Smart Citizen Kit is currently raising funds on Kickstarter, where you can get your hands on a pre-assembled kit for a pledge of $155. DIYers can choose the unassembled kit instead for $105. Check out the video below to learn more about the campaign:
