Established in May of last year, OpenAirplane makes renting an aircraft as easy as renting a car. Through the company’s service, pilots can fly more and maximize their licenses and certificates, and aircraft operators can get more business from their airplanes.

Listing of their aircraft is free for operators. Sign-up is also free for licensed pilots with at least an FAA sport pilot or private pilot certificate. OpenAirplane takes a percentage of the rental revenue that passed through their service.

With OpenAirplane, pilots can choose from the operators listed with the company and find an aircraft, book it, fly it, and then pay for its rental afterwards. Operators can also be assured of the pilot’s qualifications through OpenAirplane’s Universal Pilot Checkout. The company has a standardization and evaluation program where pilots can earn discounts on their renter’s insurance.

OpenAirplane’s service can be accessed online via computer or through mobile devices. OpenAirplane currently offers its services in six markets–New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Jose, Kissimee, and Detroit/Troy.
