Cisco and iRobot have developed the Ava 500 robot, a device that blends autonomous navigation and telepresence to enable remote workers to participate in meetings and presentations. They can meet with colleagues in an office setting or take part in a tour.
The 21.5″ HD resolution screen on top of a mobile robotics platform enables freedom of movement, location spontaneity and the embodiment of a user potentially thousands of miles away. Controlled using an iPad, Ava 500 allows employees to see a remote person face-to-face.
Users can select their destination by tapping a location on a map or choosing a specific room or employee. An available robot is then activated so they can go where they want. When the session is complete, the Ava 500 automatically returns to its charging station.
The robot could cut down on a company’s carbon footprint by having employees travel less. It is due to be available from select Cisco partners in early 2014. iRobot and Cisco will be exhibiting and demonstrating the robot at the InfoComm 2013 Conference and Expo from June 12-14th in Orlando, Florida.
