The ZenRobotics Recycler is a robotic arm that can sort trash by material type, and can distinguish between waste using sensors, scales, and infrared cameras. Tech company ZenRobotics will be installing the Recyclers at several sites in Finland this year, and it could make manual sorting a thing of the past.
CNN reports that it separates construction materials on a conveyer belt, picking out the recyclable materials and depositing them in bins for collection. The Recycler identifies different types of waste using weight measurement, 3D scanning, tactile assessment and spectrometer analysis, sorting through the objects and distributing them into surrounding chutes.
The system’s sensors gather data, which is sent across to the bespoke artificial intelligence system. This assesses each object’s material (wood, metal, stone, etc.) and decides what to do with it, instructing the robotic arm to pick up the objects and place them in the appropriate bin.
