Instagram is being used as a storefront service in Kuwait, where users are posting pictures of items for sale instead of selfies or photos with their friends. This type of economy makes use of the photo sharing service’s main feature, which is a visually appealing platform with social-sharing capacity.

Kottke posted a number of examples of Instagram businesses, including Manga Box, Sondos Makeup and sheeps_sell. The artist/musician Fatima Al Qadiri who grew up in Kuwait, said in an interview:

If you have an Instagram account, you can slap a price tag on anything, take a picture of it, and sell it. For instance, you could take this can of San Pellegrino, paint it pink, put a heart on it, call it yours, and declare it for sale. Even my grandmother has an Instagram business! She sells dried fruit. A friend’s cousin is selling weird potted plants that use Astroturf. People are creating, you know, hacked products.
