Currently seeking funding on Kickstarter, the Marina Abramovic Institute or MAI is a new interdisciplinary performance and education center, dedicated to the presentation and preservation of long durational work like Abramovic’s.
Visitors are immersed in the Abramovic Method, and must sign a contract to say they will stay for at least six hours and will be given lab coats and noise canceling headphones to wear for the duration.
The artist has explained that the initiative is inspired by one of her most famous performances she held at the MOMA where she endured a 736-hour period of gazing into audience member’s eyes titled The Artist Is Present.
