The Interstate 10 Freeway transverses the country from Jacksonville, Florida to Los Angeles, California. In a new traveling exhibition, the Manifest Destiny Billboard Project, a series of billboards with images by artists interpreting the American Dream will be erected along the 2,460 mile route over the course of a year and a half.
The posters from artists such as Zoe Crosher (who curated the exhibit with Shamim M. Momin), Mickalene Thomas and Mario Ybarra Jr. will touch upon the notion of the American Dream and the fantasy of looking to the West for opportunity and prosperity. Sponsored by non-profit art organization, LAND (Los Angeles Nomadic Division), the project – according to the website – is intended to ‘allow each of the artists to explore their shared investigations into the development of society and cities, specifically the westward manifestation that has built Los Angeles into the cultural epicenter that it claims today.’
The first roadside attraction is artist Shana Lutker’s billboard poster of clouds, placed in Jacksonville. Of the overall project, Crosher told T Magazine:
Instead of talking about the trip west, the idea is to physically move through the very landscape being fantasized.
