Megaphone Transforms City Dwellers’ Voices Into Projected Imagery [Video]

Public art installation gives people an opportunity to speak out and voice their opinion, leaving behind visual "footprint" in Montreal.

Montreal wants to light up the city with voices and ideas, finding new ways to bring life and meaning to their streets and public spaces. To carry out that aspiration,  Moment Factory installed an interactive speaking platform in Montreal’s Promenade des Artists, where a Megaphone gives passersby a podium to express their thoughts and a way to explore the art of public speaking. The Megaphone not only amplifies your ideas, but it also turns them into visual images and project them against the nearby Kennedy Building.

Having put together over 300 events, shows, and art installations across the world, Moment Factory is an innovative new media and entertainment studio specializing in producing multimedia projects involving video, lighting, architecture, sound and special effects. Produced by the National Film Board of Canada and the Quartier des Spectacles, the Megaphone is the newest addition to their visionary art installations.

This urban installation has three zones: a square bordered by animated containers which allows anyone to speak into the megaphone; the façade of UQAM’s President-Kennedy building, featuring projections of visual effects generated by voice recognition; and a “speakers’ walk” which displays distinctive orators who have brought about positive social change.

The Megaphone project will be entertaining Montreal residents and tourists every week from September 4 to November 4. There are no restrictions on the topic, except that it must relate Montreal in some way; people can reserve time slots of up to 60 minutes.

Watch below for a behind-the-scenes look at how this project came to fruition:
