Design project imagines a bike wheel functioning similarly to the trunk of a car.
While more and more urbanites are taking up cycling, the bicycle is not the best transportation vehicle when it comes to lugging stuff. Although saddle bags and baskets have become handy aids for cyclists, research by a team of students at Georgia Institute of Technology discovered that most people prefer to carry a normal bag – something that doesn’t feel like a commuter bag. With that in mind, David Hotard, Matthew Campbell and Edwin Collier created a wheel that also doubles as storage trunk.
They decided to ‘design a bike around bags, not a bag around bikes,’ says Hotard. Their bicycle, called Transport, is inspired by the trunk of a car and features a front wheel that is hubless – without spokes – and has a storage space instead, which is suitable for most bags. While the bike is currently only a design concept and prototype, the group hope to be continue to develop it.
