Fulfilling his childhood fantasy, the CEO of Telsa Motors Elon Musk recently bought the Bondmobile featured in the 1977 Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me. The vehicle had a projected auction price of $990,000, but Musk purchased submarine/car hybrid for $866,000.

James Bond's Lotus Esprit submarine car

Musk shared how disappointed he was as a kid when he found out the half car half submarine Lotus was a fictional idea.

It was amazing as a kid in South Africa to watch James bon in the The Spy Who Loved Me drive his Lotus Esprit off a pier, press a button and have it transform into a submarine underwater. I was disappointed to learn that it can’t actually transform.

This Lotus Esprit is not just a collector’s item to Musk. With a daring project in mind, he plans to turn this movie prop into an actual car that transforms into a submarine, as portrayed in the movie.
