Cardboard Photo Booth Dispenses Quirky, Customizable Portraits [Video]

Artist creates an amusing way to draw portraits.

Swiss artist Tobias Gutmann has created the “Face-O-Mat,” a photo booth-style illustrated portrait “vending machine” which takes some inspiration from The Wizard of Oz. The machine is actually nothing more than a cover for Gutmann, who sits behind a cardboard façade while he draws a bizarre minimalist portrait of you in exchange for a small donation. That doesn’t change the fact it’s an excellent idea that has brought a smile to countless people’s faces.

It takes the artist three minutes to produce each of his portraits, which is impressive considering he has to peer through a hole to do it. The completed piece is then fed through a slot to give the impression it’s being printed, complete with printer sounds of course.

While it might sound to silly to some, the Face-O-Mat has traveled from Europe through Africa and Asia, churning out over 700 portraits in the process. Make sure to see what Gutmann can do in the following video:
