John Pugh: Service Connects Doctors And Patients For Constant Care

HealthLoop is a platform that automates various routine aspects of care.

Visiting the doctor’s office can be a stressful experience, even if it is just for a routine check-up. As a result, many people will put off going to the doctor for years, simply because the process is unpleasant or they are afraid of hearing bad news. The key to solving this issue is lowering the barrier to entry, making it easier for patients to incorporate professional medical opinion into their daily routine. The process would certainly be easier if you and your doctor could easily maintain communication between visits; not only would the visit itself be faster and more efficient, but it would be easier to practice effective preventative care, and catch any potential issues before they develop.

Healthloop is a startup working to address this issue. Founded by Dr. Jordan Shlain, a physician and commissioner of the San Francisco Health Service Systems Board, the platform was born out of the frustrations he witnessed every day from patients who experienced symptoms that went unnoticed between visits, often leading to emergency care. He developed HealthLoop as a way to keep doctors, patients and care-givers better connected between visits by offering clinical information and peer-reviewed follow-up plans that aim to automate the routine aspects of care, while tracking patient progress between visits. Through its analytics engine, HealthLoop is able to analyze patient data in realtime and enable doctors and caregivers to focus their attention on patients who require the most attention.

The goal is to save doctors time and improve the quality of outcomes for patients by helping to extend the doctor-patient relationship outside the exam room and by keeping everyone connected between visits. Through its automated follow-up patient engagement and communication tools, the platform also aims to improve patient care, track outcomes across care venues and increase loyalty for doctors and practices while reducing costs associated with unnecessary documentation and follow-up.

The startup just recently secured $10 million in Series A financing to expand implementation, so the service may soon be coming to a doctor near you. By  helping patients and their doctors exchange information more efficiently, HealthLoop will make it easier for all parties involved to be happier and healthier.
