Washington, DC-based global encrypted communications service Silent Circle and Spanish mobile telephony solutions company Geeksphone have revealed the first product of their joint venture and it’s basically a mobile phone designed to give users direct control and user privacy.

Blackphone is powered by a security-oriented Android software called PrivatOS and is described as carrier- and vendor-independent — giving users secure call services, text messaging, file transfer and sharing services, and video chat services.

Tech industry leaders such as PGP creator Phil Zimmermann, Geeksphone co-founders Javier Aguera and Rodrigo Sila-Ramos, PGP Inc. co-founder and Silent Circle CTO Jon Callas, and Silent Circle CEO and former US Navy SEAL Mike Janke are involved in the project.

In a press release, Zimmerman said,

I have spent my whole career working towards the launch of secure telephony products. Blackphone provides users with everything they need to ensure privacy and control of their communications, along with all the other high-end smartphone features they have come to expect.

The  Blackphone is set to be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain on February 24th.
