Royal Caribbean has implemented an innovative solution to improve the cruising experience for those passengers staying in the more wallet-friendly accommodations, typically relegated to windowless cabins. These windowless rooms will now feature a virtual balcony, designed to mimic the real balconies that ocean-view staterooms provide as realistically as possible.

Control Group is the company behind the technology, which essentially live-streams video from RED Epic HD cinema cameras positioned on the exterior of the ship to 80-inch high-definition screens, complete with a banister. The views are conveyed fiber-optically in real time to avoid any nauseating side effects, with northern-facing screens receiving the feed from the bow of the boat and southern-facing screens from the stern.

The virtual balconies can be experienced in person on the Navigator of the Seas, which made the debut of the digital displays on February 5th.
