Artist Sam Humphreys transforms the dolls into victims of domestic abuse, complete with black eyes, cuts and bruises.
Artist Sam Humphreys has transformed a number of Barbie dolls into victims of domestic violence as part of her recent series ‘What If?’, which includes ten images that also explore insecurity, loneliness, illness and addiction. Three of the dolls feature signs of abuse such as painted black eyes, bruises and bloodied visages.
By using a figure known for its physical perfection, hopefully conversations will be started about domestic abuse, raising awareness of the terrifying ordeal. Humphreys notes on her blog that:
The series is based on the theoretical question of “What if we were to teach our children at an early age about the harsh realities that face some?” Clearly, we wouldn’t dream of exposing children to such things and my work is by no means intended to be used as an educational tool but by using Barbie dolls, an iconic toy that oozes perfection, I am demonstrating that life for some is by no means perfect.
