Calculator apps may not seem like very thought-provoking tools, but they are useful when you need to do calculations on the go. The question is should you expect more out of such a basic function? App developer Very Tiny Machines thought so and developed Numerical, a calculator without an equal sign.

While it may seem odd not to have an equal sign button on a calculator, Numerical makes up for it by providing the user with the answer almost immediately. The app also displays the equation entered, so it’s easy to spot mistakes or mis-typings. With simple motions, users can also undo, redo, or save equations for later. The app can also tell you if it believes you’ve made an error, like attempting to divide by zero.

What makes this app interesting isn’t just it’s smart features, but rather the ingenious update to such basic technology. It demonstrates that there is always room for improvement, even for the most simple programs. Numerical is currently available in the Apple App Store.
