The New Lucky Restaurant in India is built on top of an old cemetery, where people eat amongst above-ground coffins.
We often hear tales of modern buildings erected over old burial grounds, but in Ahmedabad, India, restaurant owner Krishan Kutti decided to leave the graveyard in tact, and build his restaurant around it – placing tables and chairs amongst the above-ground coffins.
The New Lucky restaurant has around a dozen graves within it, that were preserved rather than eradicated when the café was built. Kutti preferred to keep the graves as a sign of respect for the dead, and each morning, he and his employees clean the graves, place fresh flowers and pay respect to the dead. The coffins are guarded by metal railings to ensure that no diners can actually touch them. Kutti tells The Daily Mirror:
The graveyard brings good luck. Our business has been flourishing because of these graves. It gives people a unique experience. We have maintained the graves as they were. Our customers don’t seem to mind.
